Waliku has expanded to Guatemala since 2021, with the aim is to improve student well-being and reduce chronic absenteeism and drop out of the most marginalized children.
Waliku is being implemented through funding from a private donor in partnerships to a five-year McGovern-Dole USDA programme, which is intended to improve the quality of literacy instruction, improve children's attentiveness by decreasing short-term hunger, improve children's school attendance, and increase the use of good health and dietary practices. The Ministry of Education of Guatemala has also endorsed Save the Children as the implementing partner.
Waliku in currently being piloted in 25 schools in Cunen and Chajul municipalities of the El Quiché department of Guatemala, reaching 4,308 number of children and has ambitious aims to scale up to a further 92 schools in 2022 with support from the local authorities and stakeholders.
