Wag Hemra Zone
Waliku commenced implementation in Ethiopia Wag Hemra Zone in June 2022 with the aim to improve children’s vision so they have enhanced health and well-being and can better participate in learning and other activities. Waliku and Save the Children Ethiopia are partnering with Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) and the Government of Ethiopia, to deliver this project funded by USAID.
The project, titled Vision4Inclusion implement an effective comprehensive School Eye Health (SEH) model by integrating eye health into existing School Health and Nutrition (SHN) services, with community and health-sector linkages, and generating evidence, and recommendations for national SEH guidelines, and future scale-up across Ethiopia. Waliku’s suite of tools is applied to school level data collection during the eye screening and follow-up procedures to ensure children who need eye care receive it, and as such it enables their participation in school. The project will reach 16,072 children across 20 schools, 64 teachers, and 20 health extension workers across two woredas of Waghemra Zone.

Our Objectives
- Facilitate public awareness of, and demand for SEH and related SHN services
- Increase the availability and accessibility of quality eye health services for primary-school-aged children, in and out-of-school, through mass screening, and follow-up care through Mobile Eye Clinics (MECs) and a Vision Center (VC)
- Generate the evidence base, an innovative model and recommendations for comprehensive SEH in Ethiopia by integrating vision services within existing government SHN services
